Our reality exists in a series of polarities continually being merged and supplicated into unified events within conscious experience. This is obvious in the sciences, where we are dominated by thermodynamics, wave/particle duality, and electrical charges. It is evident that our Universe is comprised of fundamental energies, and it seems an inescapable fact that human consciousness is bound to experience a diatomic spectrum of forces, energies, and fields.

Of course, to define sexual energy as some state of eroticism or arousal is to commit a logical paradox – because oftentimes these events are only due to high states of identification with gender, not necessarily true and authentic sexual experience.  Although it should be self-evident that channeling sexual energy results in activation of the biological sex organs, it is not necessarily true that activation of the genitals is the result of the presence of true sexual energetic frequency.

This is all fluffy verbiage but our point here is that sexual energy is a basic and fundamental component of the Universe that interacts with the evolutionary process to manifest the biological co-dependence of woman and man.

However, to suggest that sexual energy is a force akin to electricity or gravity is ludicrous, rather, it is the Universal reality of the opposites and this very real influence upon psychic reality we are referring to as the force of sexual energy.  In other words, sexuality functions as humanity’s ever present awareness of duality and is evidence of the sub-conscious knowing that creation takes place within the union of the opposites.

Sexual energy is therefore a psychic reality rather than a physical one, it is a conceptualization of the duality of our Universe that outplays itself in the consciousness of the human animal. Furthermore, it is a conceptualization that is deeply involved in the the human species’ ability to create, in the artistic, scientific, and procreative sense.

However, the human animal has a major and fundamental disadvantage at understanding sexual force, this disadvantage being that Ego-consciousness is strictly limited to only one half of the creative process.

In order for full understanding of sexual energy (and it’s eventual taming for the purpose of transmutation into higher frequency, or in other words to fulfill the creative Opus) the soul must overcome barriers of gender in a sense that the other half of the creative process must become known to consciousness.

The Animus, therefore, is a strong pre-Ego memory of that which predates duality. That is to say, the Ego holds a sub-conscious memory bank of psychic energy containing information about the stages of development in which the Ego developed.

Attainment of Post-Ego identification is a pre-requisite to full experience of the Animus, and for this reason the Animus lays dormant in the sub-consciousness of any individual Ego until sufficient psychic energy has been accumulated to break through into the realm of the Archetypal Psyche.

In simpler terms, in a male human Ego, the Animus is a sub-conscious feminine consciousness  that is a left-over component of a state of pre-Ego existence in which this particular human male had not yet conceptualized the idea of sexuality.

What role then does the Animus serve? Taken in the most general definition, the Animus is a center of foreign energy sitting within a unified field of fundamentally opposite psychic energy. This could be compared to the ancient symbolisms of Yin and Yang – - two diametrically opposed energies that contain their paradox within themselves.

The Animus is therefore much, much more than simply a man’s functional idea of the conceptualized female sex – - it is the recessed part of his psyche that must be active in order for the creative process to take place. Sexual energy is the result of direct experiential knowledge of duality being transcended into unity.

Gender therefore is a Ego construction that attempts to understand sexual energy. By identifying with gender, the human animal stands to gain a well-developed conceptualization of sexuality and, as a bonus, inherits a blueprint for fulfilling the Opus of transcendence, a very simple one — court and seduce the other gender. In this way, gender functions as a Egoic tool useful in developing conscious experience of sexuality.

However, gender is limited in it’s ability to unleash sexual energy in that it almost completely subverts the developmental activation of the Animus. The difficulty is further complicated by the fact that gender-identification is necessary in order to fully develop a psychic theme of opposition: that is, before the opposites can be united, they must be established as, in fact, opposites.

The reason gender falls short in activating the vastness of sexual energy is because gender is, itself, a limited construction (similar to how the Ego is a construction of the Archetypal psyche.)  Genders clearly define the traits and characteristics of the two sexes, although they fail insomuch as they do not address the fact that these traits are derived after the conceptualization of sexuality has taken place, not prior.

Lest we relapse into conventional thinking, sex is not the result of male and female. The evolution of female and male are the result of sexuality. The two polarities of our Universe which exhibit themselves in every function of nature – hot/cold, light/dark, positive/negative – - this dualism is the root of all sexuality within the human mind, the need to overcome and unify this dualism into one cohesive experience is the fountain from which all passion springs forth.

True sexual freedom can only take place with the activation of the Animus, because it liberates the Ego from gender based restrictions and the conceptualization of sexual energy. Again, sex is not the unification of the male and female gender, it is a fundamental act of union between two dualistic forces, the very same tension which exists between light and dark, this is the underlying tension of sexuality.

Therefore the Animus is a center of deep, first-hand knowledge of something seemingly paradoxical: that both sides of the dualism are, in fact, the exact same entity. Yin is contained within Yang, and Yang within Yin.

Take for example a biologically male Ego. As the child develops and sexuality becomes conceptualized into gender traits and attributes, the Ego will naturally seek the complimentary traits to itself in an effort to unify a developing awareness of the opposites.

This is not to say that the opposite of the male gender is the female gender. (The reason this is not true is because gender develops in conjunction with culture, and in today’s multi-cultural world, each of the unique conceptualizations of sexuality among the many cultures cannot easily find their complimentary traits in the gender-constructs of other cultures. ) Though, it is obvious and evident that gender constructions guide and influence the display of sexual energy, they fall short and must be abandoned at higher levels of conscious experience.

This is because genders fundamentally ignore the truth of existential experience — that raw and unbridled sexual energy can only be unleashed by an individual’s own taming and interaction with it (I’m talking about encountering sexual energy within your own psyche, regardless of how solitary or friendly this contemplation of the opposites be) — not by fulfilling the social roles genders are meant to keep in motion.

The Animus is a maelstrom of creative power that fulfills the Ego by allowing it to experience the fullness of union in conscious union. Think of it this way, in order to truly know union, the Ego must have first-hand, direct experience of being it’s own opposite. This is in effect a way to say, you must have experienced and felt what it must be like to not be you. The Animus is the center of this “non-you” energy that when consciously experienced allows for full awareness of unity.

Activation of the Animus is much more involved than merely the conscious mastery of sexual forces, it broadens itself into the fundamental act of relating the interior conscious mind to the events of the exterior world. Full-on Animus activation is akin to being in a state of plain, natural being — and this is why the Taoists exalted the conquering and control of the sexual energy.

A fully functional Animus is a source of immense creative power, joy, energy, integration, social adaptation, and allows for the Ego to interact with the world as something other than itself.
